The time span: 3000 years , from the Trojan War, c. 1000 B.C to the 1970s aftermath of the Stonewall Rebellion. The sports: Alpine skiing, ballooning, baseball, boxing, fencing, figure skating, football, golf, horse racing, jousting, marathon swimming, rodeo, sport aviation, tennis, track and field.

These figures include gay men like Brazilian balloonist and aviation peioneer Alberto Santos-Dumont.  Lisbians like the 1930’s javelin champion Ana Maria Sagi. Bisexuals like German Boxer Wilhelm von Homburg.  Transgendered and intersex people like French jouster Joan of Arc and Austrian Skier Erik Schinegger.

The Profiles go beyond compelling personal stories, into a richly tetured picture of each changing sport.  Bill Tilden and martina Navratilova are important because they reinvented the game for men’s and women’s tennis.  George Villiers 1st Duke of Buckingham is important because he launched the breeding program that resulted in the Thoroughbred horse.  The Author’s point: major contributions by Athletes with a “different” sexual orientation have gone on for many Centuries.
